Overview

This presentation-style guide walks new users through the essential steps to start a Ledger hardware wallet. It focuses on best practices: where to download official software, initializing the device, backing up your seed phrase, and understanding key security measures. Use the links below for direct access to official Ledger resources.

What you'll learn

Step 1 — Prepare

Before you begin

Only use official Ledger sites and software. Never follow links from random messages. Prepare a quiet, private workspace, and have a pen and paper ready (do not store your recovery phrase digitally).

Checklist

Step 2 — Install Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the official desktop and mobile application used to manage accounts, receive and send assets, and update device firmware. Download Ledger Live from the official Ledger site and verify the download if prompted.

Step 3 — Initialize Your Device

Power on the device and follow on-screen prompts to create a new wallet or restore an existing one. Choose a PIN you will remember but that is not easily guessable. The device will display the recovery phrase — write it down exactly and store it securely.

Important

Never share your 24-word recovery phrase. Ledger will never ask for it. If you lose your recovery phrase, your assets cannot be recovered.

Tips & Next Steps

Keep firmware and Ledger Live updated

Regular updates include security improvements. Use only official channels for updates. When using the Ledger device, confirm operations on the device screen.

Use multi-layer security

Combine a hardware wallet with strong operational security: unique PIN, offline backup of seed phrase, and a careful approach to links and emails.

Quick commands

Open Ledger Live: ledger-live · Verify your device via the app and device prompts.
